REFTEX Scenes

REFTEX is short for "Referenced Texture" and refers to a technique we use that helps make the resizing and reorientating of complex, multi-layered surfaces much easier than would otherwise be possible.

REFTEX scenes contain two important elements:
• A "swatch" polygon that has a surface pre-applied ie. one of the Pshelf surface presets.
• Reference Null object(s) that are set to control the size/position of the swatch polygon's surface layers.

The Null objects make use of a feature found on most surface layer types, namely, the ability to designate an object in the current scene as a "Reference Object". As this object moves, rotates and resizes it acts as a parent to those attributes in the surface layer, adjusting them accordingly.

When the same object is used to control many layers of the same surface, it becomes a powerful and fast way of manipulating the entire surface in one go. This means that you can quickly adapt, say, a rusty texture designed to work on small objects to work equally well on the side of an ocean liner!

We've created a practical tutorial that explains how to use these helpful scene files in your work. Don't forget to also download the project files for the tutorial before your begin.
